The fashion exhibition to discover at the MoMA this December
For the second time in its history, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City presents an exhibition on fashion. “Items: Is Fashion Modern?” explores the influence of fashion on the present world through 111 iconic pieces. This is the exhibition to see for all the fashion lovers out there.
The Museum of Modern Art has doubled its exhibition area
In praise of space and transparency at the MoMA, this magnificent museum south of Central Park, is preparing to host “Items: Is Fashion Modern?” Inaugurated in 1929, the Museum of Modern Art of New York first introduced in 1944 an exhibition on fashion, “Are Clothes Modern?” under the leadership of architect and curator Bernard Rudofsky.
The MoMA underwent a profound upgrade in 2004 to double its surface of exhibition. Less traditional than the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute (MET), but more traditional than the New Museum, the MoMA definitely has a place of choice among the most beautiful museums in New York. The MoMA exhibits its works on 6 levels (the ground floor — first floor — and the 5 levels above). The first 4 levels present the permanent collection, the 5th and 6th floors, the temporary exhibitions.
2017 signs the great return of fashion within the MoMA
The exhibition “Items: Is Fashion Modern?” announced for the month of December 2017 promises to attract a curious audience as it will be the first fashion expo of the MoMA in the last 72 years. You won’t find any large vintage pieces, valuable or rare articles. Levi’s 501 jeans, small black dresses, Casio digital watches, scarves, flip-flops, Nike’s Air Force 1s to Chanel №5’s bottle and a Vivienne Westwood x Louis Vuitton fanny Pack will be on display. These everyday clothes and accessories teach more about habits, social, economic or political policy of a certain time.
Antonelli and Fisher are the organizers
This exhibition would not have been possible without the energetic participation of two women behind the scenes. Paola Antonelli is the principal curator of the “Architecture & Design” section and also Director of Research and Development of the famous Museum of Modern Art in New York and Michelle Millar Fisher, curatorial assistant, department of architecture and design at MoMA.
Various renowned designers will participate
At the expo, you will get the archetype, the stereotype, and the prototype. The MoMA also used several designers to imagine a garment in the near future. Among the items in the exhibition are Donna Karan’s seven easy pieces, a Panama hat, a Stephen Burrows jumpsuit, Paul Poiret harem pants, a Birkin bag, Havaianas flip-flops, down jackets by Norma Kamali and Moncler, Yves Saint Laurent Rive Left The Smoking, and a Wonderbra. Use of new materials and futuristic cuts. Observed, decorticated, and reinvented.
